If you’re looking for the latest edition of comic books like Batman, Superman, or the Green Lantern, you will no longer be able to find it at Barnes & Noble. WFAA has more.

Shon Gables, WFAA: “Barnes and Noble wants publishers to share or face the consequences. The retailer is taking DC Comics off the shelves because the digital copies were being offered exclusively for Amazon’s Kindle. DC Comics has made 100 titles digitally available for the first time only for the new color Kindle."

Last week, when Amazon launched the Kindle Fire, it also announced its partnership with DC Entertainment to sell its digital comic books. DC plans to first make 100 original graphic novels available to the digital screen, then add more than 50 new comic books on the same day in both digital and print. According to The New York Times, Barnes & Noble chief merchant Jaime Carey says it just wasn’t a fair deal for his company.

“‘To sell and promote the physical book in our store showrooms and not have the e-book available for sale would undermine our promise to Barnes & Noble customers to make available any book, anywhere, anytime.’”

America’s largest bookstore chain said the removal is simply standard operating procedure when a digital format is withheld. But a writer for the comics blog Bleeding Cool thinks it’s a bit petty.

“The decision is a bit short-sighted and reactionary, as it not only prevents Barnes & Noble from offering product to the new DC readers brought in by the reboot coming in to check out past trades, but also with the recent closing of chief competitor Borders, it leaves no mass market bookstore selling this work.”

A DC Comics spokesperson said the company was disappointed in Barnes and Noble’s reaction, but a blogger for the LA Times thinks DC will not suffer as much as the bookstore might hope.

“DC will swallow the sales hit from Barnes and Noble for the four months rather than alter its Amazon agreement, apparently betting that it can make more money online that it would have in the retail giant’s stores.”

But as one writer for Buzz Focus points out this might just be karma coming back for the bookstore chain.

“...let us remember that Barnes & Noble have ... exclusive collections made available only in their stores like the mega-large hardcover omnibuses of Ultimate Spiderman or the affordable trade paperbacks of Marvel Masterworks collections. These were not made available to comic book stores. Seems to me that B & N got a big taste of their own medicine.”

If you’re deadset on buying your graphic novels from Barnes & Noble, don’t worry. You will still be able to special order them through the company’s website.
