New York football fans are about to see a familiar face. Plaxico Burress is back in the NFL -- and back in the Big Apple. (NY1)

“Same town, new team-- Plaxico Burress is back in the NFL, agreeing to a deal with the Jets. The team confirmed it has signed the former Giants star receiver.”

So it’s from jail to the Jets. Burress is returning to the field after a two year prison sentence stemming from a weapons charge after he famously shot himself in the leg.

Despite his off the court issues, ESPN reports several big-name teams were vying for wide receiver. They explain how it all came together.

“The Jets had been in discussions with Plaxico Burress- they heated up last night after his visit with the Pittsburg Steelers. Plaxico was flying today to San Francisco to go visit the 49ners. He was on a layover in Los Angeles and essentially the Jets were told that basically, one team, thought to be the Philadelphia Eagles, [had been told] that if they met a certain price, Plaxico would sign with them. The Jets then asked if the same would be true for them and they were told yes.”

Of course, the Jets grabbed Burress first — to the tune of a one-year deal worth $3 million.
But a writer for The New York Times says -- the move has its risks.

“[The amount] is a hefty sum of money for a 33-year-old receiver - he turns 34 on Aug. 12 - who has not played in nearly three seasons. It is also unclear whether Burress has worked out for teams, making it difficult to know what type of physical condition he is in.”

A blogger for Ology agrees, but says history may be on the Jets’ side this time around.

“Before his self-inflicted wounds and jail time, Burress was an accomplished receiver for both the Steelers and Giants, but you have to imagine that taking more than a year and a half away from the game could affect his performance. On the other hand, the post-incarceration success of Mike Vick and… Jamal Lewis may have given the Jets some hope that Burress can return to form.”
