She won in Ames -- but some say that was the beginning of the end for Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann.
MSNBC ANALYST: “Ironically I think the day she won the Ames Straw Poll is going to be the worst day of her campaign because it’s the day Rick Perry got into the race.”
MSNBC ANALYST: “He’s made Michele Bachmann a bit less relevant because it’s not clear where her constituency comes from aside from Iowa and Minnesota.”
In fact the post recent New Hampshire Journal/Magellan poll -- has Mitt Romney leading the field with 36 percent of the vote. TX. Gov Rick Perry and Rep Ron Paul took 2nd and third -- and Michele Bachmann -- just 10 percent for fourth place.
That’s a far cry from taking first in Iowa. Politico’s Molly Ball says Team Bachmann’s new mission: remind voters she’s still here.
“...Bachmann, accustomed to being underestimated in the race, isn’t ceding any ground. She’s attempting to fortify South Carolina, determined to replicate her Iowa success through dogged outreach and ideological purity. As in Iowa, she’s making an under-the-radar push for the conservative Christian vote...”
But even some of her fellow contenders suggest the congresswoman is too gaffe-prone to win the nomination. Here’s one she’s taken heat for in recent days.
“Under President Bachmann, you will see gasoline come down below $2 a gallon again. That will happen.”
On ABC’s “This Week” Sunday -- former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman suggested Bachmann doesn’t live in the “real world.”
“I just don't know what world that comment would come from. You know, we live in the real world. It's grounded in reality. And gas prices just aren't going to rebound like that. But just as we are in a static world, that is completely unrealistic.”
But in an article for National Review -- Andrew McCarthy -- who worked on Rudy Guiliani’s ‘08 campaign -- says Bachmann can win. He suggests -- her Tea Party appeal shouldn’t be underestimated.
“Michele has been campaigning to America. She is also smart, attractive, and telegenic. She’s got charisma, as well as sharp eyes and ears for the issues on which she can separate herself and the biting examples/phrases that will get her points across. She is in Washington but not of Washington.”
