A ray of hope in the midst of a disaster. Rescuers miraculously saved a newborn baby who had been buried for nearly 48 hours after a massive earthquake shook Turkey. NECN has the details :

“We want to update you on that story I was just telling you about out of turkey. They've been telling you about this 14-day old baby girl rescued alive from the rubble of a collapsed building. 46 Hours after the earthquake struck, the little girl - her neam is Azra - is now being checked out by doctors. Rescuers working to proceed her mother.”

The earthquake’s death toll has risen to more than 360 and another 1,300 people are injured , according to the Turkish government. This makes the quake the worst tremor to hit Turkey in the past decade. (Image source : ABClocal)

The New York Times reports the rescue of the baby is one of many miraculous stories of survival.

“A 19-year-old...survived by using his cellphone to direct teams to the collapsed building where he had been trapped; and a man dug with his hands to free his fiancée from the rubble of a cafe.”

But ABC notes the dramatic rescue is-- sadly-- an exception :

“Unfortunately, rescue stories like the one that we just saw are few and far between. Most bodies being pulled out of the rubble are being pulled out dead. (...) People are still walking around here  crying and looking stunned. If you ask them  if they think people are still going to be found alive, they answer ‘Insha'Allah’ -- God willing.”

Overall-- the Economist says the Turkish government has handled the disaster well.

“Turkey’s conservative prime minister, rushed to Van to assess the scale of the disaster and to ensure that his government was fully mobilised to cope with it... Some 2,318 rescue workers, 12 sniffer dogs, 200 ambulances and 355 earth-moving machines were dispatched to Van within hours.”

The baby’s mother and grandmother were also rescued from the rubble-- but her father reportedly still missing.
