A U.S. soldier is being held after he allegedly plotted a terrorist attack on the Fort Hood military base in Texas.
The scare was less than two years after a mass shooting killed 12 people at the same base.
CNN reports...
“21-year old Army Private First Class Naser Jason Abdo, was arrested yesterday at a traffic stop in Kileen, Texas just outside of Fort Hood, Texas. This all came from a tip off from a local gun shop owner who said Abdo, who you see there, was in the shop acting suspiciously."
NBC News reports it's the same store where Major Nidal Malik Hasan bought a gun, and went on a rampage through the base in November 2009.
But what about possible connections between the two events?
The Los Angeles Times says the incidents are directly linked.
“The U.S. official said Abdo chose the Ft. Hood area for the planned attack because the base was the scene of a 2009 shooting rampage."
The New York Times says it’s stirring up tough memories all-too-soon for the military base.
“The announcement of his arrest renewed a sense of vulnerability at Fort Hood”
Abdo applied for and received conscientious objector status from the military -- meaning he did not have to go to battle. His justification? Religious reasons...
Many media outlets are connecting the alleged crime to Abdo’s religious background.
Fox News reports.
“What we can tell you about Private Abdo is that he is a Muslim who applied for and received conscientious object status from the army. He was also in possession of Jihadist material when he was arrested and is facing federal charges because he was found with ‘bomb-making’ materials."
The Killeen Daily Herald reports Abdo is set to make an initial court appearance Friday.
