U.S. attorneys indicted 14 alleged members of the Gambino crime family including reputed boss Daniel Marino. The feds charged the group with several offenses, but many media outlets are noting one charge that's particularly gruesome — the prostitution of minors.
We're looking at perspectives from CNN, WPIX, HLN, the New York Daily News and Buzztab.
CNN spotlights U.S. attorney Preet Bharara as he describes the Gambino crime family.
Preet Bharara: "Today's arrests cover literally decades of criminality. From as far back as the 1980's, up to and including 2009."
Preet Bharara: "We charged 10 individuals as being participants in the Rico enterprise. With the boss Daniel Marino. The two soldiers, Onofrio Modica and Thomas Orefice, who each had there own crews working underneath them and engaged in basically every conceivable type of organized criminal racket."
New York's WPIX reports that child prostitution isn't a mob family's typical MO.
"The most surprising charge though was sex trafficking of a minor. La Cosa Nostra, the collective of six mafia crime families has traditionally followed an unwritten code not to victimize children. In this case, the FBI says the Gambino family sold teenagers into prostitution including a 15-year-old."
HLN depicts how the Gambino family allegedly exploited young women.
"Prosecutors say sex trafficking of a minor is new territory for organized crime. There is some court documents that say the group recruited prostitutes at strip clubs including a 15-year-old and advertised them on the Internet."
And the New York Daily News gives disturbing details on what life was like for the girls.
"He (Orefice) personally looked over the 15-year-old, a 10th-grade runaway, and consented for his goons to sell her for sex, prosecutors charge."
"As a sideline, Orefice made these same women available to gamblers who played poker at his illegal, high-stakes games, prosecutors charge.
When they serviced the poker players, the fee went into the pot, prosecutors said."
A BuzzTab reporter compares the recent charges to the masses earlier connotations of the Mafia.
"Where are those old good days when Mafia maintained the respect of women and children?"
"....it was all in those good old days when mafia was involved with every crime but not minor prostitution. What would Godfather think of it? Shocking!"
A U.S. attorney says the charges are a "new low" for organized crime. What do you think?
