Clashes between Greek protesters and police continue outside the Parliament building in Athens. It all follows the arraignment of a police officer accused of killing a 15-year-old dissident.

We’re bringing you ongoing perspectives on the violence from the BBC, Kathimerini, CCTV, and France 24.

The BBC looks at the damage the rioting is doing to local businesses. It cites an Athens Traders Association estimate that the cost is already more than 1 billion Euro.

“In Athens, shopkeepers are fed up and urging the government to deal with the rioters.”
“I am angry. I don’t know why they’re doing all this. I think, there’s something in their head.” (BBC)

France 24 points out that Athens authorities have numerous questions to address. They say the rioting has exposed major lapses in how Greek police contain crowds.

“It’s all raising awkward questions over police methods, as they struggle to bring rioting under control. In these images broadcast on Greek television, an officer fires live ammunition into the air, while this picture is said to show an officer pointing his gun at protesters.” (France 24)

Greek newspaper Kathimerini says the government is at fault on two counts - responding poorly to the riots, and fostering the conditions that led to them.

“For a society at the end of its resources, the killing was an act that distilled every betrayal and dead end that we fear. We see the fraudulent claim of “free” education, health and security, knowing that if we do not pay we will enjoy none of them. We see our politicians incapable of meeting the challenges of the times, looking only after their own interests as the rest of the world leaves Greece behind.” (Kathimerini)

CCTV expands that idea, by talking with Greek residents about what they feel is at the root of the chaos.

“You have to understand what people need, why young people are upset. Not look at a bunch of hooligans smashing things, but what the young people are feeling”
“I only have one thing to say: I am ashamed to be Greek. I’m so disappointed.” (CCTV)

What steps should authorities take to resolve the violence in Greece? What do you think is fuelling the chaos?
