Cut the launch rumors. Apple’s new iPhone fi – I mean – 4S is here.
Apple’s Senior VP Philip Schiller took the stage to “talk iPhone.” And while the tech journalists we’re ready to pen the number 5, a New York Times blogger writes...
“We're looking at the existing iPhone 4, hearing how great it is. But now [Schiller]’s talking about the iPhone 4S. Muted applause. … This is sort of funny - reports were out there that Apple was ‘hiding’ the iPhone 5 in an iPhone 4 body. Maybe Apple wasn't hiding it at all.”
They weren’t. No iPhone 5 this time. And a blogger for Gizmodo says he’s a little disappointed the Cupertino team didn’t deliver.
“I was hoping for something bold and interesting looking. The iPhone 4 was just that when it shipped. So too were the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G. If I'm going to buy a new phone, of course I want it to look new. “
But a blogger for Engadget says don’t judge an iPhone 4S by its unchanged cover.
“[A]s you might expect... it's an iPhone 4. But S-ier. Much in the same way that the 3GS improved the overall experience of the 3G, the 4S does likewise compared to the existing 4. The dual-core A5 chip is a laudatory improvement, and whisking about pages, loading the camera application and launching, well, just about everything, just feels zippier. As it should.”
And that’s not all that’s changed about the new core. The Cupertino team introduced Siri, the smart assistant. It’s a voice recognition software that Gizmodo reports can, well, check this out.
Man: “What’s traffic like around here?”
Siri: “Here’s the traffic.”
Man: “Text my wife I’m going to be 30 minutes late.”

Paul Hochman for TheNewSimple.com tells MSNBC, Siri is one big reason pick up the 4S.
“I think there are two things that are happening that are really exciting - one general, one specific. I think generally, and I’ll be a contrarian here, I think Apple is finally catching up with the Android-powered phone market. … But really one of the most exicitng things is the fact that you can actually speak to it.”
For Sprint customers, the best feature is the phone itself. The iPhone 4S will now be available on AT&T, Verizon and, as expected, Sprint. Mashable reports on the challenge ahead.
“Now [Sprint] must find a way to poach customers from other carriers and sell 30+ million iPhones in the new few years. Otherwise, it could collapse under the financial pressure of its deal with Apple. Sprint is getting the iPhone, but it paid a hefty price to do so.”
The price for the 4S starts at $199. It will be available for preorder on October 7th and in stores on October 14th. As for when the lines will start forming, if only we could ask Siri.
