Apple has finally unleashed Lion-- and so far-- the reviews for the new operating system are pretty positive.
Here’s tech columnist Walt Mossberg.
Walt Mossberg (Tech columnist): “What they’re doing here is taking some of what they learned from the user experience on the iPhone and iPad and moving them over to the computer.”
One of the biggest changes from Lion’s predecessor, Snow Leopard--
You can now swipe to scroll--and pinch to zoom-- just like on an iPad. Most tech bloggers agree-- this is pretty cool.
But not everyone’s a fan. A Wired blogger says inverted scrolling makes sense on an iPad-- but argues on a Mac...
“...I believe it’s the disconnect between peripheral and screen that makes it less intimate than a touchscreen device, and therefore uncomfortable to completely replace traditional mouse gestures with the real-world swipe.”
Techies are also roaring about Lion for ditching the disk-- making it the first Apple update that can only be downloaded from the App Store. CNET’s Jason Parker says, the $30 price tag is fair-- but a lot of Apple-ites don’t have the App Store-- because they don’t have Snow Leopard.
Jason Parker (CNET): “Unfortunately this means that if you skipped over Snow Leopard, you’ll still have to buy it for $29 in order to get the Mac App store to download Lion. We can see why Apple did it this way but frankly, it doesn’t seem fair to those who chose not to buy Snow Leopard.
But overall-- Parker highly recommends the new Lion system. So do other critics-- including Macworld’s Jason Snell.
“Can novice users fresh from the Apple Store and grizzled Mac vets ...share one operating system without driving each other crazy?... With Lion, Apple seems to be doing a fine job of adding novice features without making them too maddening for more comfortable users.”
But a Gizmodo blogger disputes that-- saying...
“By trying to please everyone, the OS X team has produced an incongruent user interface...that won't satisfy the consumers seeking simplicity nor the professional users in search of...control.”
Alongside Lion-- Apple also released an updated Macbook Air, making it its new entry-level laptop and discontinuing the white Macbook.
