From college dropout-- to a tech titan-- and now--
After being on medical leave since January-- CEO Steve Jobs is leaving the top post at Apple.
But Tom Giles of Bloomberg News says there’s no indication Jobs’ health has taken a turn for the worse.
“He put in a full day of work today, he attended a regularly scheduled board meeting. This is Steve Jobs, absolutely. His condition was described as weak, but we were also told that we should not interpret his resignation as some sign of a very sudden downturn and worsening of his health.”
Apple briefly became the most valuable publicly traded company on the planet earlier this month-- and analyst Ben Reitzes tells CNBC-- Jobs exit doesn’t mean an end to profitability.
“This is a situation where this man left this company from the CEO’s seat not wanting to do so, not wanting to at all. He practically had to be dragged away from the CEO role. This is not like Microsoft’s change with Gates to Ballmer, or that kind of thing. This is a company at the top of the game.”
Apple did stumble-- at least briefly. Stocks dipped more than seven percent on the news of Jobs’ resignation. But WIRED’s John Abell tells CNN that was to be expected.
“We all knew this day was coming. And I believe the market, even though Apple stock has risen quite a lot in the past year, has baked in the expectation that Steve Jobs at some point would step down, and sadly that day has come.”
And Huffpost UK blogger Patrick Garratt suggests-- relax. It’s all going to be OK.
“Stop panicking. The Apple will grow. And Steve Jobs, finally, will be able to step back from the demands of coal-face management of one of the world's most successful companies, and see to his health. Given such a sparkling career, it's about time.”
Jobs will stay on with Apple-- he’s taking over as board chairman, just in time for the launch of the next iPhone.
