The battle for smartphone supremacy rages on as Apple announced record iPhone 5 sales Monday. KGUN and WLNY have the details.

“Apple says it sold two million of them in its first weekend on sale in China. The company calls that its best product launch there ever.”

“But the sales haven’t eased worries about stiffer competition in the smartphones that are driving a slide in Apple’s share price. Shares fell 3.8 percent on Friday alone.”

Despite the tech giant’s best ever product launch in China, a blogger for CNET recently noted that Apple recently fell out of the country’s top five smartphone vendors.

So, do the record-setting launch sales mean Apple can reach the top of the world’s largest smartphone market? A blogger for GigaOM says Apple won’t be taking the number one spot anytime soon.

“Besides Apple devices being much more expensive in China, 3G isn’t as widely available to subscribers, and the iPhone is not the first or even second-most popular phone model in China. Rather, Apple is competing with entrenched local brands making inexpensive devices that run android.”

But a writer for TechCrunch says Apple could climb the smartphone ladder, but it needs to strike a deal with China Mobile - a deal that has been stuck in place for about four years over network compatibility and revenue disagreements.

And a writer for Forbes believes Apple’s strong opening weekend puts the company on track to sell more than 50 million iPhones for the month of December.

Apple says the iPhone 5 will be available in more than 100 countries by the end of December.
