Rumors are swirling about the next iPad mini — but they’re not coming as much of a surprise.

In a very brief report Friday, DigiTimes cites “Taiwan-based backlighting industry sources,” who say the iPad mini will soon be refreshed with a high-resolution retina display.

If it’s true, the iPad Mini could soon have the same resolution as its bigger brother. The latest full-size iPad already has a retina display.

9to5Mac calls Digitimes’ rumor trackrecord “infamously unreliable,” but admits the site has been closer to the mark when it comes to the displays in Apple’s devices. It accurately called the screen resolution boost in the 2012 macbook pro, and the new iPad’s retina display.

But Gizmodo wonders — is it fair to call something a rumor if it’s so widely accepted as inevitable?

“It's simply a statement of fact, one that's been known since the day the first iPad mini came out. You might as well say that the next iPad mini will have a faster processor or a bigger battery… “

Okay, so what if we do assume it’s a matter of when and not if? A writer for VentureBeat expects Apple won’t wait around much longer.

“My guess is six months, as the tablet market is moving fast, and more competitors are nipping at Apple’s heels. This rumor adds fuel to that fire.”

A release date six months from now would be quick for the company. The shortest wait between iPads has been eight months, the time between the release of the new, retina-enabled iPad and the iPad Mini.
