Apple CEO Steve Jobs’ has stepped down and COO Tim Cook has stepped in -- to both his shoes and his trademark turtleneck. So, who is this guy? CNN explains.
“Tim Cook is a real, sort of, operations guy. He was a lifer at companies like Compaq and IBM before he came to Apple and he really came to Apple to kind of manage inventory, make the trains run on time. And then he just really proved himself and obviously took on much, much more responsibility.”
And writers at MSNBC think Cook, an Apple employee for the last 13 years and the company’s Chief Operating Officer since 2007, may be just the man for the job.
“Cook is an understated and hard-working leader, the yin to Jobs’ hot-burning charismatic yang. … Despite the significant differences between Jobs and Cook, turning the reins over to Cook may prove to be far smarter, in a cultural sense, than finding a substitute Jobs.”
And the International Business Times adds that isn’t the first time Cook has successfully taken the reins.
“Cook had CEO stints in 2004, 2009, and 2011 before getting the job full-time after Jobs' official resignation. ...since Jobs took an extended leave of absence in January 2011, Apple has released a successful iPad2, sold record number of iPhones, and even briefly topped Exxon Mobil as the world's most valuable company.”
But will Jobs’ right-hand man ever fill his predecessor’s shoes? A writer for Wired thinks he’ll always be stuck in Jobs’ shadow.
“In the public’s eye, Cook has become the Riker to Jobs’ Picard -- and people generally like Riker. There may be no way to truly replace Steve Jobs, but Apple knows that publicly supporting Tim Cook is, at the very least, good PR.”
If Cook’s first memo to his employees is any indication, however -- things may not change too much. USA Today quotes his memo, saying:
“Steve built a company and culture that is unlike any other in the world and we are going to stay true to that -- it is in our DNA.”
