Could Apple be making an earlier than expected entry into the smart TV race? That’s the speculation from Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair who, according to All Things Digital, says Apple may include TV functionality in the next generation of iMacs.
“We believe Apple’s redesign of the iMac in … 2012 will likely usher … TV capability into the iMac offering first, effectively taking the high end and larger screens of the iMac line and pushing it toward the TV market by integrating Apple TV and iCloud features into a slimmer all-in-one PC...”
And if the rumors turn out to be true, The Register says the TV tuning iMacs could be a guinea pig for a forthcoming television line.
“...since Apple is also believed to be working on a TV of its own, perhaps the company sees the iMac as proving ground for the tuner tech, the UI and the software to tie them all together that it will need to get completely right before the telly ships.”
Blair believes that line of logic makes sense. Telling 9to5Mac...
"...Apple could effectively start with what they already have on the manufacturing line and slowly push their offering from 27 inches and scale up from there to 32 inches and then move on to the 42, 50 and 55 inch market.”
But PC Magazine says, if Apple wants to compete in the race for TV set supremacy, it’s going to need to up its game from its current set-top box. PCMag notes...
“...for all its enthusiasm for television, Apple has had an uncharacteristically tough time capturing consumers' attention with its first stabs at an Apple TV, even putting out a small, $99 version of the product last year in an attempt to get the ball rolling.”
Finally, if these rumors turn out to be the real deal, writers at Forbes say they would welcome the TV-computer combo into their homes with open-arms.
“It would hardly be a big stretch to imagine bumping my old Panasonic plasma out of its niche in the living room in favor of a new living-room focused Apple television. Just sayin’.”
