Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Apple seems to be taking that to the extreme.
See if you can follow along. Apple sues Samsung. Samsung sues Apple. And now? Apple and Samsung -- are happily working together -- on a new project. Weird, huh?
The Korea Times has the details.
“Apple has started quality testing Samsung and LG’s LCDs at one of its laboratories in China. Samsung and LG were required to produce screens with better picture quality and density, according to sources, who anticipate the testing process will be completed during the third quarter."
Still confused? So are we. The “frenemies” are reportedly working on an LCD screen for the rumored iPad HD or iPad 3. Macstories has more.
“The LCD displays currently being tested are QXGA with a resolution of 2048 x 1536 – a resolution twice that of the current iPad display. Such a resolution for a 9.7" display would mean the display has roughly 260 DPI and would likely fit under the ‘Retina Display’ marketing term."
...but, considering the courtroom combat the two have engaged in recently some find the collaboration a bit strange. TheNextWeb explains.
“The decision to work with Samsung comes as a surprise, especially as the Cupertino - based company is looking to cut ties with the Korean manufacturer and reduce component orders as a result of legal action against the vendor. The company has already begun working with chip maker TSMC to start trial manufacturing of next generation A6 processors, a component expected to feature in Apple’s upcoming smartphone and tablet lineup."
Writers at SlashGear, however, believe Apple may be stuck between the proverbial rock and hard place.
“Samsung’s continued presence on the Apple component supply roster, despite the ongoing legal battle between the two companies, is indicative of how reliant the Cupertino company has become on its Korean friend/foe."
So who is the winner is this mess? Not Apple. Not Samsung. According to writers at Geek.com, it’s LG.
“Apple’s ongoing legal wranglings with Samsung should give LG the advantage in this regard, but in order to win its retina display must at least equal Samsung’s offering both on quality and price. If it comes out on top in categories like power consumption, color reproduction, and response times, to name but a few of the criteria, Apple will happily award the contract to LG."
LCD screen manufacturers: Can’t live with ‘em. Can’t live without ‘em.
