A controversial ad campaign starring British actress Keira Knightley arrived at U.S. cinemas and on TV screens in the UK this week.

In the 2-minute short film, the actress is shown suffering a repeated, brutal assault from her partner.

The graphic video has spread widely on the Internet and stirred debate about its appropriateness.

Hello, I’m Charlotte Bellis and you’re watching Newsy.com.

CNN’s Showbiz Tonight host A.J. Hammer thinks the public service announcement comes out at the right time.

“Did the ad go too far to make its point? I, for one, don’t think so. I think this is something a lot of people are agreeing particularly on the heels of Chris Brown/Rihanna drama. It’s an issue that needs to be discussed and it has become a hot button issue obviously.” (CNN)

Thinkfashion.com also links the PSA release to the controversy between Chris Brown and Rihanna, and praises the British star.

“Many celebrities have spoken out on domestic violence since the Chris Brown/Rihanna situation but Keira’s fearless portrayal of a victim is the boldest statement yet.” (thinkfashion.com)

Nebraska’s ABC affiliate NTV brings us reaction from a woman who was a victim of domestic violence for three years. She said the ad is hard for her to watch.

“It really made me cringe … because I've been through it before.”

However, NTV says the woman doesn’t think it’s too violent for television, quoting her saying…

“I really think this is something that should be aired to let other women know this is what happens.” (NTV)

A writer from UK’s The Guardian doubts the effectiveness of using celebrities in the anti-domestic violence ads. It also suggests the campaign shift the focus to the perpetrators.

“If you had a male celebrity on screen who was kicking and punching an anonymous woman, people would be gobsmacked, … There’s no reason that people would go on to perceive them negatively, any more than people are now going to perceive Keira Knightley as a victim.” (The Guardian)

So what do you think about the PSA? Do you think it’s gone too far to convey the actual message?
