Anti-gay activist, Family Research Council co-founder, and Baptist minister — Dr. George Rekers — took a 10-day trip to Europe recently. He also took something else — a gay male prostitute. MSNBC’s Ed Schultz has the lowdown on why Rekers needed his — travel buddy.
“Rekers claims he did not know the man was a prostitute until mid-way through their trip and he had paid him just to carry his baggage. Rekers found his escort at a website called Rent-a-boy.”
A blogger for SF Weekly says the escort’s online profile told Rekers everything he needed to know.
“Among many other things, the boy is open to shaving, spanking, and vanilla. …That revelation makes it kind of unlikely that Rekers didn't know that the boy was a hooker, don't you think?”
A picture circulating the web shows Rekers’ "travel assistant" watching the supposedly indisposed pastor, lifting luggage.
With speculation running rampant, New York Magazine ran Rekers’ second attempt at explaining his curious travel habits.
"My hero is Jesus Christ who loves even the culturally despised people, including sexual sinners and prostitutes. …I deliberately spend time with sinners with the loving goal to try to help them."
But the escort, Jo-vanni Roman, remembered the trip a little differently when he talked to Miami’s New Times.
“…[T]he Baptist minister is a homosexual…paid him to provide body rubs once a day in the nude, during their 10-day vacation in Europe. Rekers allegedly named his favorite maneuver the ‘long stroke’….”
On Comedy Central, Stephen Colbert came to Rekers’ defense, saying give the guy a break — this could’ve happened to anyone.
“Clearly folks, this is an honest mistake. Rentboy.com looks like a website where you hire bellhops. The men are all shirtless so you can see how big their bag carrying muscles are. And there are even videos where these rent boys show how good they are by yanking and grabbing things by the handle.”
Finally, a commenter on Free Republic says the whole scandal looks like a set-up.
“Typical liberal media lies. From what I've heard, Rekers hired the guy specifically so he could counsel him *against* the lifestyle choice. The homosexual community goes nuts every time someone successfully leaves the lifestyle so they are targeting Rekers.”
So do you think the media is going after Rekers too hard? Or did he earn the public’s scorn?
