ANCHOR MEGAN MURPHY
A familiar computer voice has a message for Wall Street.
“We, the people, shall stand against the government's inaction. We, the people, will not be witnesses to your corruption and ill-gotten profits. We will not labor for your leisure. We will not assist you in any way. This is why we choose to declare our war against the New York Stock Exchange.” (YouTube / TheAnonMessage)
That message from powerful hacktivist group, Anonymous. The attack is being called Invade Wall Street. And Fox News reports the group’s plan to take out NYSE on October 10th is giving authorities serious cause for concern.
“The FBI is on the case, and they’re not messing around. Anonymous has taken out Bank of America, Visa, Mastercard and PayPal."
But is the message for real? PC Mag is skeptical and points out...
...a separate message from the group claims the threat is a fake, a plant from law enforcement to undermine the Occupy Wall Street Movement. (Pastebin)
“Whether or not that's the case—and PCMag is unable to confirm or disprove that theory—it remains true that the very nature of Anonymous makes it difficult to ever say with certainty that some faction or another is not a ‘legitimate’ part of the ‘leaderless’ global movement.”
And ZDNet adds...
“Unlike a corporation that has a direction and a chain of command, members of Anonymous act on whether they agree with a proposed operation, rather than taking instructions.”
So, hmmmm, no leader, no legitimacy? Or is Wall Street in DDoS danger? Gawker says...
“[I]t kind of doesn’t matter whether it’s a plant or not because ‘Invade Wall Street’ doesn’t really make sense as an ‘operation’ anyway. DDoSing the NYSE website would take down its public site, but it wouldn’t halt trading or cripple the stock market.”
But wait, Anonymous has another message for, well, itself.
This press release warns against the attack and says the video tells hackers to use LOIC, what the note says is a irresponsible tool that doesn’t protect users’ identities.
“Many of our brothers and sisters have gone down in the fight for using such tactics, like the wikileaks defendants who took down Visa, Paypal, and Mastercard which led to mass arrests. We do not want history to repeat itself, and are sincerely worried.” (Anon News)
Which unnamed source to believe — we can’t really say. But it sounds like computer voice will be there, maybe.
