Ever since ‘Mean Girls’ made the joke-- it’s no secret that women’s adult Halloween costumes can be a little too revealing.
But some say one costume has gone too far, causing some real Halloween horror.
WFLD has more.
“One costume online makes fun of a serious illness. The issue is not so much what it looks like; although that could be an issue too- it is racy, as a lot of women’s costumes have been in recent years. A skeleton look is also common. What’s different about this costume is that it is called ‘Anna Rexia.’ First name ‘Anna’ last name ‘Rexia.’ That’s meant to be a pun on the eating disorder, of course, anorexia.”
The costume comes complete with a skin-tight dress, a tape-measure belt, a name tag and a bone barrette. An outraged Independent blogger wrote a note to the creators of the costume.
“A skeleton costume is understandable – traditional even – but attempting to turn Anorexia into something sexy by throwing it on a plastic, fake boobed, airbrushed, blonde sex bomb? There are no words.”
The costume was taken off of the shelves at a popular costume store in New York City- but it’s still on sale online. The Stir believes that all Halloween costumes for women aren’t too classy.
“Personally, I find the costume to be incredibly tacky -- but then again, I find most Halloween costumes designed for women to be tacky and tasteless. Dressing up in a tight, cleavage-baring costume for Halloween has become such a cliche that I'd personally never do it.”
ABC asked a board member of the National Association of Anorexia Nerviosa and Associated Disorders about the seriousness of the illness.
"I'm just appalled because eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. Depending on the rates, and how long people have had the disorder, mortality [for the illness] can be from 10 to 15 percent. There are also high suicide rates with people that have anorexia. There's not a system of the body that it does not impact."
The most ironic thing about the ‘Anna Rexia’ costume? It comes in plus sizes.
