Were guessing the ‘toga’ chant has never before been heard on Broadway, but as KDVR reports …

“Universal Pictures confirms today they are making a musical based on ‘Animal House.’ It will feature original music by the Barenaked Ladies, and be directed by the guy who did ‘The Book of Mormon.’”

Anchors on Fox Business are excited …

“This could be good, right?”
“It would be better than good.”

But a reporter for The Atlantic Wire doesn’t seem as stoked, especially since the Barenaked Ladies — the band behind the 1998 single “One Week,” are doing the score.

“Broadway musicals always do debauchery really well, it's just such a wild demographic, so this fits perfectly. Even better news … The always-relevant Barenaked Ladies will be writing the score. So hopefully there will be lots of jokes about monkeys and emus and stuff. Woohoo! Party on, Broadway! What a great idea.”

But, remain calm — the director is a Tony award winner. The Washington Post says the play has potential … as long as a food fight doesn’t break out, of course.

“ … this has the potential to be a cheeky … fun song-and-dance show ... But it has to be handled just right, otherwise this could be the worst idea since ... well, since pretty much every other Broadway adaptation of a beloved motion picture that focuses on characters who would never, in 85,000 years, go see a Broadway musical.”

No word yet on when the musical will hit the stage, but the news was announced on the 30th anniversary of the death of John Belushi, who starred in the movie.
