King of the world – or at least the Smartphone world. That’s Google – not Apple – and it is king by a longshot.  A new study released by Canalys reports Android is dominating worldwide.

“The Android operating system is now on almost half of all cell phones around the world.  Mountain view based Google owns Android.  A high tech market analyst says Android now has a market share of 48%.  Cupertino’s Apple has a market share of 19%.

According to the report – Android has shown the steadiest growth of all mobile platforms - and its most recent quarter was even more impressive.

“Nearly 52 million Android-based smartphones shipped in Q2, a staggering 379-percent increase over a year ago. Android has been the top platform by shipments since the fourth quarter of 2010.” (Canalys)

The report indicates the race between Google and Apple is tighter in the U.S. than anywhere else.  A writer for PC Magazine notes – in other countries, it’s a much different story.

“Why the boost? Canalys pointed to strong Android support from major handset makers like Samsung, HTC, LG, Motorola, [and] Sony Ericsson... Android holds 85 percent of the market in South Korea and 71 percent in Taiwan alone.”

And Bloomberg points out – all of Google’s success is coming without many patents -- even after a recent purchase of 1,000 patents from IBM.

That -- is apparently surprising.

“Patents thus, the chosen instrument of war in this mobile battle.  Google far behind the curve, when it comes to this tool.  Before the Nortel auction Google had just 2,400 patents including applications.  Compare that with Nokia’s 16,000 and Apple’s 7,800.”

As the war continues - there is good news for Apple, too.  According to new numbers from Strategy Analytics -- in the second quarter, Apple shipped more iPhones than any other mobile company -- making it the world’s top Smartphone vendor.
