Analysts are predicting Amazon has a tablet in the works - and if it makes it to the market-- it could sell 5 million devices in 90 days.
Compare that to the 3 million Apple cleared when it first released the iPad.
Arik Hesseldahl tells The Wall Street Journal-- it’s possible.
“Amazon will be able to trade on two important things. It has a very strong brand recognition for itself. But the kindle brand, since 2007, has also become extraordinarily powerful.”
....
“That will be a key question, if Amazon can come in a price that’s below or at iPad-level prices, in which case it would make it a lot more interesting to consumers.”
International Business Times writer David Magee agrees- saying- it’s all about the price tag.
“Some industry experts believe Amazon is likely to launch its tablet at less than $300. If that happens … watch out. Amazon will become an overnight force in the tablet market.”
But Robert Strohmeyer with InformationWeek says-- it’s not just about dirt-cheap prices.
“Amazon doesn't need to race to the bottom to succeed here. It just needs to offer a compelling alternative to devices that are already available.”
So an Amazon tablet might do well. But on video podcast All about Android, Aaron Newcomb asks-- can an Amazon tablet offer something that’s not already out there?
“If you look at the way Amazon is marketed right now, you can do all that stuff from your android phone, or from existing Android tablets. So what’s going to be different about the Amazon Android tablet? That’s the key here.”
Even if Amazon gets into the tablet fray-- Dan Rowinski for ReadWriteWeb says a lack of physical market presence may make it hard for Amazon to compete.
“... there are pitfalls for Amazon as well ... Amazon has no retail presence like Apple, nor does it have the same partnership with physical retailers.”
Analysts think if Amazon decides to compete with Apple, tablets may start shipping as early as October.
