Another major tournament, another major trophy for Novak Djokovic.
The world’s top-ranked tennis player took down both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal en route to a U.S. Open title -- his third grand slam of 2011.
As the wins mount, CBS’ Justin Gimelstob says it’s time to crown a new tennis king.
“Well, Novak Djokovic is the dominant player in men’s tennis. One of the best, if not the best year in the history of the sport. He’s only lost twice. He’s won three grand slams, and he’s getting better - that’s the scary part.”
In 2011, Djokovic is 64 and two -- if he wins the year out, he’ll have the best single-season record since John McEnroe’s 82 and three mark in 1984.
So is Djokovic’s dream season the best ever? Sports Illustrated’s Joe Posnanksi writes -- not so fast:
“Thing is, McEnroe himself thinks Djokovic’s year is better. And he should know. The competition’s better, he says. The game is better. The athletes are better … That’s certainly true. But McEnroe might also be underselling his own dominance.”
Meanwhile, the closest competition has taken a beating. Nadal has lost to Djokovic six times in 2011 -- all in finals. The New York Daily News’ Filip Bondy writes, Monday’s match capped a changing of the guard:
“It was a deflating moment for Nadal, a nasty epiphany. He must now truly understand what it felt like to be Roger Federer facing Nadal on clay all those years. After six straight head-to-head defeats to Djokovic, the mental block has been passed, like a baton.”
Djokovic isn’t done yet -- as The Wall Street Journal’s Tom Perrotta writes, there’s plenty more season to go:
“Djokovic could lead Serbia to its second straight Davis Cup title. He could add to his haul of Masters events: He has won a record five already and there are two more on the calendar, plus the prestigious season-ending event in London … After what he did at the Open, anything seems possible.”
