Former Godfather’s Pizza CEO and current GOP presidential hopeful Herman Cain has pulled what many are calling an upset, coming out on top in the Florida Straw Poll.
Here’s Florida’s WPTV with more.
“37.1 percent-- Herman Cain.”
“Businessman Herman Cain may not poll nationally as a top-tier candidate.”
“But here in Florida today, he beat them all.”
“To Democracy 2012 and the word today is ‘upset.’”
Cain had more than double the percentage of votes won by Texas governor Rick Perry, who had 15 percent. Mitt Romney was third, just one point behind.
The result left The Washington Post’s Ezra Klein scratching his head on a panel for MSNBC.
EZRA KLEIN, THE WASHINGTON POST: “There’s something about watching people say that Herman Cain is a plausible choice for the president of the United States--I don’t care if people think he gives a good speech, he does. …He’s got sort of arguably a refreshing take on politics, you know, people like this type of citizen politician, citizen activist vibe he gives off. …It is hard for me to believe that there are people in their heart of hearts who look at Herman Cain and say this guy should have a lot of nuclear weapons at his disposal.”
CNN’s Candy Crowley is more of a believer, but suspects Cain’s win isn’t based on his performance alone.
CANDY CROWLEY, CNN: “He is a good orator, he does grasp and hold onto the core of the Republican party’s conservatives. He talks a good business game, and we know this is all going to be about economics and he’s the one person in the group who’s helped build a business, etc. …He really puts in good debate performances, but more than that, Governor Perry put in a bad one.”
Crowley’s referencing Thursday’s Republican debates in Florida, hosted by Fox News and Google.
A blogger for NPR was on the scene at the straw poll and explains why some say Perry dropped the ball - at least in Florida.
“Some of the votes Cain won came from former Perry supporters. Many at this week's event said they were having second thoughts about the Texas governor after he defended his support of a Texas law that extends in-state tuition to children of illegal immigrants.”
Perry released a statement after the poll results congratulating Cain and taking a swipe at Romney, who was just one percentage point behind the Texas governor.
The weekend crew at Fox and Friends explain the jab, and say it was a misstep.
“Mark Miner, who’s the press secretary, says this is a loss for Mitt Romney. He’s been in this for five years, and we’ve been in this for five weeks.”
“Here’s what-- I’m confused about that quote. …Okay, the implication there is you haven’t gained traction, either. If Mitt Romney has 14 percent and you have 15, then neither of you have gained traction, so let’s not highlight the fact that you haven’t gained traction.”
Finally, WPTV spoke to the Palm Beach GOP chair, who has one overall impression from the poll.
EVAN AXELBANK, WPTV: “The Cain victory produces on big takeaway.”
SID DINERSTEIN, PALM BEACH GOP CHAIR: “It shows that we’re far away from a consensus among the supposed front-runners.”
Minnesota congresswoman Michele Bachmann, who won the Ames Iowa Straw Poll in August, came in dead last with 1.5 percent of votes -- but she did not officially participate in the event.
