New York democratic congressman Anthony Weiner’s seat is up for grabs next week in a special election. Here’s Fox News with the latest:
“In a new poll, Republican Bob Turner is leading Democrat David Weprin by six points. Weprin was the heavy favorite in the predominantly democratic district. The special election will be this Tuesday.”
Pundits say the election has become an opportunity for voters to voice their unhappiness with Obama and the Democrats, giving Republicans an advantage. Pollster Steven Greenberg told the New York Times:
“You have the potential perfect storm for the Republicans. When the country is headed in the wrong direction, you want to blame the people who are there. And who are in charge? The Democrats.”
Weprin, a New York State Assemblyman, and Turner, the creator of “The Jerry Springer Show,” faced off on funding the Department of Education in a debate earlier this week on NY1.
“Do you know the answer, how much they contribute to schools in New York on an annual basis? It’s 12.8 billion dollars.”
“12.8 billion dollars, that’s all taxpayers’ money, and we get a discount…”
“So you’d rather not have that 12.8 billion dollars for our schools in New York?”
“I’d rather have it to begin with, simple as that.”
In a last minute effort, the Democrats have spent half a million dollars in ad campaigns within Weiner’s former district, which, according to NPR, may not even exist in the 2012 elections.
“In the end, the redistricting gods may get the last laugh since the district is considered one of two in the state that may vanish, a result of reapportionment.”
In a statement, Turner’s spokesman said, "The voters of Brooklyn and Queens are speaking to Mr. Obama through this contest, and they will not be silenced."
