Fall TV is back. The 63rd Primetime Emmys kicked off the new TV season with plenty of surprises. Deadline starts us off with some mixed reaction to the night’s big wins-
“It was … nice to see some shocker wins just to shake things up like Kyle Chandler’s for Actor in a Drama Series in Friday Night Lights … On the other hand … do we really believe there is no show better than The Daily Show with Jon Stewart or The Amazing Race which dominate their categories every year to the point of complete boredom.”
The hosts at Hulu’s The Morning After run through one win that was anything but boring.
GINGER GONZAGA: “And, finally, the ‘Was That Planned? Award’ goes to Amy Poehler and her fellow nominees for storming the stage while their names were read in an act of solidarity, to show that they were all winners for best actress in a comedy. Now ‘Mike & Molly’s’ Melissa McCarthy ended up actually winning the award, of course, for her performance in Bridesmaids.”
MELISSA MCCARTHY: “It’s my first and best pageant ever!”
While McCarthy might’ve been upstaged by her fellow nominees- and her new movie star status- a writer for TIME suggests her big win saved the Emmys from becoming the Modern Family awards.
“…the award livened up the proceedings after a beginning that looked liked a runaway for Modern Family (a fine sitcom but not the best thing on TV last year) ... Taken as a whole, though, the awards were a testament to the distribution of quality in TV today.”
Another buzzed about moment? Charlie Sheen presenting the award for best actor in a comedy. ABC’s Lara Spencer and Emmy winner Jim Parsons react to what happened.
LARA SPENCER: “The audience- not knowing what to expect- held its collective breath.”
CHARLIE SHEEN: “From the bottom of my heart, I wish you nothing but the best for this upcoming season.”
JIM PARSONS: “It was odd.”
LARA SPENCER: “It was very earnest and, and self-deprecating. Not weird.”
JIM PARSONS: “Well, that- you’re exactly right. That’s what was odd about it.”
So, what about the show overall? Reaction’s mixed- but The St. Petersburg Times’ The Feed gives host Jane Lynch kudos for keeping the awards afloat.
“Don’t blame host Jane Lynch, who tried mightily to elevate a string of lackluster gimmicks, including having stars such as Chuck’s Zachary Levi and Community’s Joel McHale sing snarky introductions to awards in a woeful bit called the Emmytones…”
And while not everyone was a fan of this year’s telecast, New York Magazine argues the show did set the bar high for awards season.
“…if it wasn't as good as last year’s Jimmy Fallon-hosted spectacular, it did continue a trend upheld by the recent Tonys and Grammys, of being much, much better than this past Oscars. Eddie Murphy, the gauntlet has been thrown!”
