The Anaheim Ducks won their first game in 19 days on Wednesday but lost head coach Randy Carlyle. The NHL Network has the story.
ED COHEN: “Crazy things happen after dark, and such was the case with Bruce Boudreau last night. Following their 4-1 win over Montreal, the Ducks fired Randy Carlyle. His replacement? Bruce Boudreau who just five days ago was let go by the Capitals.”
The Ducks replaced the franchise’s all time winningest coach with the NHL’s fastest coach to reach 200 wins. An Anaheim Calling writer says this change is just what the reeling ducks needed.
“It was time for a new voice to be heard and a new regime to take over in Anaheim for the benefit of the players in their prime, the veterans on the verge of retirement and the rookies starting out fresh. The business end of this deal said Carlyle's voice was no longer the loudest in the room when it counted most.”
Boudreau’s hiring is already the fourth coaching change in the NHL this season. A Sports Network writer says the move might buy the Ducks more time to trade left winger Bobby Ryan.
“The coaching change also casts doubt on Ryan's situation, who was said to be on the trading block in Carlyle's final days with the Ducks … Now with Boudreau behind the bench, it would probably be wise to hold onto Ryan for the time being, to see how the youngster responds to the new leadership.”
And a Grantland writer points out--the first team that fired their head coach isn’t doing too bad.
“With so much coaching upheaval going on, it's worth noting that the St. Louis Blues, the first franchise to fire their head coach this season, have gone 8-1-2 since replacing Davis Payne with Ken Hitchcock.”
As for Carlyle, a writer for The Hockey News says he might not be out of a job for long.
“And as we see in Columbus, Long Island, Calgary and Colorado, there is no shortage of struggling teams who might snap up Carlyle before the all-star break, if not the start of next season.”
