The Amish are known as a peaceful group, but apparently they have their own problems with infighting. WPTV reports.

“Apparently a rogue group of Amish, they've been disowned from mainstream Amish because of conflicts in spiritual differences. They are breaking into other Amish people's homes and cutting off hair and beards.”

The BBC says four separate counties have fallen victim to the band of barbers and because the Amish aren’t keen to press charges, there isn’t much the police can do.

The Intelligencer / Wheeling News Register reports the group are called the Bergholz clan, and the attacks are due to orders by their religious leader.

“...hair from the victims was brought back to Jefferson County to prove to Sam Mullet, the bishop of the Bergholz group, that Mullet's orders concerning the hair cutting was followed.”

But a haircut? What’s wrong with taking off a few inches? A writer for Slate explains.

“The attacks are meant to be degrading because Amish women do not typically cut their hair and married men usually grow beards as part of their religion...”

While Mullet is threatening the hair of the Amish, he’s also threatening the life of the local sheriff, who told Tribune Chronicle -- he should be taken seriously.

“If I were called tomorrow and told they're all dead up there, I wouldn't be surprised. I'd put him up against Jim Jones … All I can tell you is, that guy's dangerous.”

Authorities told the Huffington Post they plan to arrest at least four men involved with the clan.
