American English teacher Joel Shrun was killed by gunmen in Yemen Sunday. Euronews has the details.

“An American working as a teacher in Yemen has been shot. He was killed in an attack by two men on a motorcycle in the city of Taiz, 200 kilometers south of the capital Sanaa.”

Shrun was working at the International Training and Development Center.  Police sources say a group affiliated with Al Qaeda is claiming responsibility for his death. According to Sky News, a statement by the Fighters of Ansar al Sharia says...

“The attack is in response to a Western campaign to preach for Christianity among Muslims...”

But Voice of America says that is a typical response.

“Islamist militants often accuse Western aid and development groups of proselytizing.”

Taiz is a commercial hub where many foreigners live and work, so the attack on Sunday has caused Yemen officials to step up security measures. According to CNN, an annonymous defense official says...

“...We are investigating the killing as this is the first of its kind against a western national in Taiz...”
