An Amazon tablet to rival-- the iPad?

That’s the word from the Wall Street Journal- reporting Amazon’s tablet is due in October.

"The Amazon tablet will have a roughly nine-inch screen, people familiar with the product said, and will run on Google's Android operating system.”

But can Amazon compete in a tablet market dominated by Apple? Bloomberg says, don’t count on it.

"Given the success of Amazon’s Kindle, a tablet seems to be the next logical step. But none of the Android tablets released so far have succeeded in denting iPad’s dominant market share. The iPad still has 97% of tablet web traffic in the US, and 89% worldwide."

TechCrunch’s Matt Burns agrees
- saying, the specs just aren’t up to par.

"Nine-inch screen, no camera, and running an unnamed Android release. Doesn't sound like an iPad killer to me."

But an Appolicious blogger points out-- maybe Amazon’s sights aren’t set on Apple.

“Instead of competing with the iPad, Amazon could preload its tablet with access to its stores … and make it compatible with services like Amazon Prime and one-click checkout … No other Android tab could compete with Amazon’s content distribution, so the tablet would be a real force even against Google...”

According to the Wall Street Journal, sources say unlike the iPad2,  the Amazon tablet will not have a built in camera.
