There is not just one reason for the fighting, and therefore there is not just one solution. If the Taliban wanted simply to dominate the Afghan government, then a traditional overwhelming force might control them. But this is not World War One; war strategies have changed, and war solutions must change also. Winning a war is no longer simply about killing each other until the signing of a truce; it is about addressing the problems that led to the fighting in the first place - otherwise the unrest and inevitably the fighting will continue. This means that we need more than soldiers in Afghanistan; we need teachers, we need engineers, we need translators, we need infrastructure supplies, we need many things. We should not expect to turn Kabul into a safe and thriving metropolis as we define it; we should expect to help the Afghan people turn Kabul into a safe and thriving metropolis as they define it. We help them with the foundation, teach them how to build, and they then have the pride of construction.

The indiscriminate killing of civilians by the unmanned drones are a huge stumbling block to positively addressing the war's underlying issues. Yes, these strikes may kill Taliban leaders, but because they surround themselves with civilians such strikes inevitably mean that we lose support. By killing both Taliban and Afghan civilian we create a commonality between the two that Taliban recruiters may be capitalizing on.

The advantage of the unmanned drones is that troops on the ground are not required for such strikes. There are no troop movements that warn the Taliban of our approach. But troops on the ground will be much more highly skilled at avoiding civilian casualties than unmanned drones.

We are faced with adjusting to a redefined role in a world in which we are no longer the dominant economic power. That has consequences for our military strategies and particularly for our foreign exploits.

I agree that there does not need to be more troops and that we DO need to gain the trust of the Afghan people, but I also don't think we are responsible for protecting them from anything and everything, then we will never be able to exit the war. As the France 24 correspondent said, we don't need more troops, just for the ones we have to do the right job.

I don't believe sending more and more troops to Afghanistan is going to help win the war. As the France 24 reporter mentioned, U.S. soldiers need to win the trust and confidence of the everyday Afghani citizens if they ever plan to win this thing. Without that trust, the tension remains and we are left wondering why we are still in that country (as we were in Iraq before) when the people themselves do not want us there. Obviously, there are national/international concerns that keep us fighting the war. But shouldn't the ultimate goal be to work with/help these people win the war and get their country on its feet again?

Yeah, I have a new tactic-Get the hell out of there and let them deal with their own! I have a nephew there now. He has been in the army 91/2 years, 3 tours of Iraq( 2 were 15 month tours),1 tour of Kuwait. It destroyed his marriage. He's clinically depressed but does the Army care about that? Naa, when he wanted out last spring when his time would have been up in Oct, the Army threatened him with sending him back to Iraq in July for a year and he had just come home from Iraq in January. He re-upped but now wishes they would have just sent him back and got it over with.He hates Afghanistan. He would have been out for good had it not been for the threats from the Army . Where is the justice in that? What kind of tactic do you call that, manipulating peoples lives?
