Actor Peter Falk, best known for his role in the TV series “Columbo”-- died Thursday at age 83 in his Beverly Hills home.

We knew him as “Columbo”, the shifty-eyed, trench coat detective that touched the hearts of many with his “everyman’s” working-class accent.

“Excuse me sir, just one more moment. Peter Falk said of Columbo, ‘you feel sorry for him’. He looks like he’s seeing nothing, but in fact he sees everything. As Falk put it to Charlie Rose, ‘Who didn’t love Columbo?’ ‘Columbo, you love the guy?’ ‘I do. Eskimos love Columbo.’”

Columbo caught the attention of a young Steven Spielberg at age 25, who directed the series premier---which became so popular it aired in 26 countries. Larry King interviewed Falk in 2005 to get a feel for this now classic role.

“I was attracted to the idea of playing a character that housed within himself two opposing traits. On the one-hand, a regular Joe six-pack, the neighbor, like everybody else. But, at the same time, the greatest homicide detective in the world.”

Falk was well known for having a right glass eye after losing his right eye vision from cancer at only three-years-old. Hypervocal recalls Falk’s version of the story in a1997 interview in Cigar Aficionado magazine:

“I remember once in high school the umpire called me out at third base when I was sure I was safe. I got so mad I took out my glass eye, handed it to him and said, ‘Try this.’ I got such a laugh you wouldn’t believe.”

Multiple agents swore that would prevent Falk from ever launching his movie career. But--he went on to win four Emmys for this classical detective role and guest starred in the 1987 “Princess Bride” as the narrator and clever grandfather--embraced by younger audiences.

PETER FALK: “When I was your age, Television was called books and this is a special book.”

And, as Falk always said, “Oh, there’s just one more thing,”-Falk’s style of pestering questions in Columbo are now taught in police academies nationwide --called the “Columbo Interrogation technique.”
