Last night’s Valero Alamo Bowl between the Washington Huskies and the Baylor Bears was one for the history books. And much like the previous sentence, it didn’t feature any “D.” This morning, there seems to be a pretty unanimous review of the wildest game in bowl history.
“Last night, an INSANE Alamo Bowl." (MSNBC)
“An absolutely insane Alamo Bowl.” (MSNBC)
“We put on a show.” (ESPN)
They certainly did. For those who missed the game, hang your head- records tumbled and players exploded.
The two teams combined for the most points ever in a regulation bowl game- 123. They also combined for the most combined yards- 1,397. Baylor took home the most yards by a single team- 777 and the most points- 67. No, we’re not done yet.
Washington’s Keith Price is the proud owner of seven TDs the most ever by a single player.
A few of those came in the third quarter, which featured 43 points- the highest scoring single quarter in bowl history. Which probably helped lead to the final record, most TD’s in a game- 17.
And that’s not even including all the Alamo Bowl records they broke. Need a breath? Us too. So does Robert Griffin III, who told reporters after the game he wants to relax and take it all in before making his decision on the NFL. But on ESPN, analysts say don’t bother wondering, he’s not coming back.
“This should have been the last time we get the pleasure of seeing him play on a college football field. We will see him play on a professional football field next year. Barkley and luck are coming back to play for national championships or heisman trophies. He's not doing that. Baylor won't win the national championship, he has the heisman. There is no reason to come back. Sam bradford was another one of them. He is nfl ready right now.”
You know who else might be NFL Ready? Washington QB Keith Price. Four TDs through the air, three on the ground. All night, he went toe-to-toe with the Heisman winner, and the Seattle Times says, he may have come out on top.
“...the game left everyone singing the praises of Price, who accounted for seven touchdowns ... and almost upstaged the performance of the Bears' Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, Robert Griffin III.”
And The Washington Post says no “almost” about it.
“...Overshadowing everyone, though, was the other quarterback, ...Keith Price, finally healthy after a season of nagging injuries...”
For the record, RG3 threw for 295 yards and a TD, and rushed for 55 and another score. Baylor runningback Terrance Ganaway ran for 200 and five TDs. It was Baylor’s first bowl win since 1992.
