After eight drama-filled seasons, it looks like the original desperate housewives are going their separate ways. (Fox News)
“The ladies of Wisteria Lane might be packing up. The drama Desperate Housewives is rumored to have one season left.”
ABC confirmed the rumor Sunday, saying the iconic series did a lot more than entertain us--it broke barriers.
“The eighth season, set to premier this fall, will be the last for these modern day Lucille Balls, who let us behind the doors of their seemingly perfect lives and shed a bright light on the dark side of the American housewife. We saw television moms and wives who were frustrated, who were bored, who realized that maybe this isn’t everything that I want.”
The New York Daily News tried to shed some light on the announcement saying that--although still popular--the show struggled to keep up with its earlier ratings.
“The seventh season of ‘Desperate Housewives’ was a top-20 show last year, averaging almost 12 million viewers per episode. That's about half the number who watched it in its first two seasons, when it was TV's hottest phenomenon.”
But 12-million viewers an episode? Is that really a good reason to stop a hit show? ABC acknowledged stiff competition from some “Real” housewives, but the show's creator agrees with the network -- saying it’s just the right time to close the book on Wisteria Lane. (Times Colonist)
"It’s something that has weighed on my mind for a long time now... As someone who has worked in television for 23 years, I’m well aware of outstaying one’s welcome. I didn’t want that to happen here, and so we decided that this was the right time. I talked to the cast Friday, and we’re going to have a whole year to reflect on what an amazing ride we’ve had."
The eighth and final season is set to premiere September 25th.
