It’s almost hard to believe, but another sex abuse case has hit the sports world. First, there was Penn State’s Jerry Sandusky. Then it was Syracuse’s Bernie Fine. Now two men are accusing Robert “Bobby” Dodd, the long-time president and CEO of the Amateur Athletic Union, of sexual abuse.
ESPN first reported the story, and interviewed the accusers.
Ralph West: “I’m the evidence. I’m not trying to gain anything out of it. It’s not like, ‘Oh wow, here let me go on national TV and humiliate myself and possibly embarrass my family and stuff so I can tell everybody this deep dark secret that I've had.’”
The two told ESPN’s Outside the Lines that Dodd sexually assaulted them in Memphis in 1984 when they were kids and he was coaching their basketball team. The second man, who has not been named, alleges Dodd drugged him in order to assault him.
The Daily Mail has the details surrounding the accusation.
“Their disturbing allegations are coming to light now, decades later, from two grown men who were spurred on by the arrest of former Penn State University football coach Jerry Sandusky … the teen found a trove of photos of boys’ clothed crotches and backsides, underwear apparently taken from boys Dodd coach and a collection of hair pulled from children’s heads.”
WREG in Memphis caught up with a player who worked with Dodd on several occasions -- who says the situation is sad all around.
“It’s incredibly sad when you hear what came out. You understand the impact - if it’s true - the impact it could have had on the victims. But it’s also sad for him. It’s just lives that have happened that aren’t supposed to happen that way. To me, it’s sad on every level.”
NBC’s Alex Witt and Jay Gray wonder if the sports world should prepare itself for even more sad situations.
“I tell ya, it just never ends, it seems of late. All these revelations. Good morning.”
“Yeah good morning to you Alex. It’s disturbing. It’s frustrating. And you’re right, you wonder where it’s going to end. A lot of people are saying this is really just the tip of the iceberg.”
But rather than this be just the tip of the iceberg, a SportsGrid writer hopes it’s the end.
“You know, they say that bad things happen in “threes.” Well, here’s to hoping that they’re right, because I don’t think I can take any more of this.”
The AAU has removed Dodd from his posts as president and CEO is investigating the allegations, as are police. Dodd has not yet commented.
