I agree that it is encouraging to see more young people getting involved in politics across the globe. The DPJ are rookies, but they also bring a new perspective to issues in Japan and therefore have the potential to succeed on a dramatic scale or fall on their faces. It will take time to tell, but one thing can be sure, it is an exciting time of opportunity in Japan.

Anytime a new Western concept--or in this case political party--actually succeeds in a country not used to that concept, it takes a bit of work to make it work within its new context. That new context is now Japan. While the DPJ has existed in the country for awhile, it hasn't had power or influence for over a half-century (as mentioned in the video).
Overall, I think this victory is a positive change for Japan. It will just take a little bit of time and work to establish this party as a successfully ruling one in the country.

It appears that elections in both Japan and the US are reaching younger voters, not surprising given Japan's severe economic downturn. The citizens want to try something new. One interesting perspective is just how this new government will effect Japan's strong relationship with the US.
