"All of us need to demand a Congress brave enough to stand up to the gun lobby's lies. All of us need to protect citizens," President Barack Obama said.

President Obama has announced executive actions on gun violence.

One measure will require anyone in the business of gun sales to conduct background checks on buyers.

He is also proposing new investments in mental health access; gun safety technology; tracking illegal online gun sales; and staffing for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

Obama said his executive orders were a result of Congress failing to take action to restrict gun violence.
