A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of southern California early Friday morning about 160 miles southwest of Avalon. Good Morning America reports

“People in cities such as Los Angeles and San Diego flooded police stations with calls, some tweeting that moviegoers watching ‘The Hobbit’ actually ran out of the theater.”

A tsunami warning has not been issued, and so far there are no reports of damage or injuries. But there was initial confusion on how many earthquakes there were and how strong they were.

According to KABC in Los Angeles,“It was initially reported that there were two quakes, 6.4 and 6.1, within seconds of each other, but seismologists concluded it was only one temblor.”

And CBS News notes after the U.S. Geological Survey originally reported the quake was 6.4 magnitude, it …

“... revised the strength of that quake to 6.3 magnitude.”

Despite no one reporting injuries, people in southern California still noticed shaking. One man told NBC Los Angeles, quote, “the quake felt like a rolling motion that lasted some 25 seconds.”
