8-year-old Sophia Grace Brownlee and her 5 year old cousin Rosie became a YouTube sensation with their cover of Nicki Minaj’s song ‘Super Bass’.
But the lyrics have a few people wound up. Their adorable tutu’s and tiaras weren’t enough to convince a blogger for The Urban Daily that their performance was appropriate.
“Sure, the video is cutesy and the song is catchy but I think the parents should have listened to the lyrics first before allowing their young white daughters to rap about liking a “hood” kind of guy who sells coke…”
Others are able to look past the lyrics and see some talent. A writer for CBS News sings the girls’ praises.
“Wow. Simply wow. I went into this video thinking I would watch a little girl perform an adorable attempt at singing Nicki Minaj’s “Super Bass”. I finished totally impressed by this girl, whose performance was more than just an adorable attempt.”
A writer for The Hollywood Gossip thinks whether or not you agree with the subject matter, the impersonation was spot on, and the entertainment world may have a new face.
“...she nails the thing...It’s hilarious, disturbing and musically impressive...Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez, you best step off. This “Super Bass” cover tops all”
The young fans had their dream come true when Ellen Degeneres flew them out from the UK and had them on her show. To the delight of the girls, Nicki Minaj made a surprise appearance.
While on the show, Nicki took the opportunity to give the talented tots some sound advice.
“I just want you to stay in school. Music is beautiful but stay in school...Put your books first and singing second.”
