Twitter was alive with the sound of music Thursday night-- as the nominees for the 2012 Grammy Awards were revealed.
Hollyscoop: “The 2012 Grammy Nominations were announced last night and Kanye West leads the pack with a whopping seven nominations. Coming in second place with six nominations each are Adele, Foo Fighters, and Bruno Mars.”
CelebTV: “No huge snubs in the best new artist of the year category, but we’re lovin the mix of rap, folk, and electronic nominees with Nicki Minaj, The Band Perry, Bon Iver, and Skrillex.”
Despite being the nomination leader-- another artist may be stealing Kanye’s spotlight— no, not Taylor Swift. So which fan favorite is CNN calling unbeatable?
“The five-letter name on everyone's lips was Adele, the British singer who picked up six nominations and managed to steal the show without even being there. Screaming commenced when her name was mentioned... and the love was so widespread, her competition joined in.”
Jason Aldean: “I feel sorry for anyone who has to go up against Adele this year, I’m going to be honest with you. I was actually hoping that if we did get a nomination, it wouldn’t be in any category with her in it.”
Bruno Mars: “Why am I up against Adele?!”
Melanie Fiona: “It’s a true testament to the quality of music that she makes.”
But it wouldn’t be awards season without a few shocks and snubs. MTV gives us an overview.
“I think it was shocking that Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy or Taylor Swift’s Speak Now were both shut out of album of the year. I think Mumford & Sons getting four nominations was pretty shocking. I think by far, the biggest shock is Bon Iver getting four nominations.”
Other shocks? Beyonce was left out of Album of the year, and indie sensation Foster the People got passed over despite Pumped Up Kicks being largely recognized as the top single of 2011.
And the next shocker-- was from CBS. Before the nominations-- the network said it would reveal the name of a legendary band that would reunite for the Grammys — but that never happened.
“Producers were mum, but sources close to the show said that talks with the band — reportedly the Beach Boys — fell apart in the 48 hours leading up to the nomination show.”
Besides the night’s ups and downs-- one Salon blogger says overall-- the Grammys got it right.
“The awards remain clueless about metal, R&B and Americana -- but amazingly, it's hard to argue with the major picks.”
