The world’s most expensive bottle of whiskey sold this week -- for a whopping $200,000.
The Huffington Post reports the sale might have been an impulse buy... somewhere you might not expect.
“The [Chinese businessman] was flying through Singapore's Changi Airport when he eyed the the 62-year-old bottle of Dalmore single malt. He immediately set up a 100,000 Singapore dollar bank transfer to cover the deposit...”
The Dalmore distillery in Scotland crafted the pricey drink -- barely breaking the distillery’s own record price set in 2005. Last year, MSNBC spoke to an expert about the previous record-holder. He explained how special that record breaking Dalmore was.
“There’s only three bottles and once it’s drunk, this masterpiece of Dalmore Trinitas is finished, that’s the end of it... [FLASH] It’s when you put it in your mouth, and I really mean putting it in your mouth, sipping it, holding it long and then it reveals it’s hidden treasures”
A writer for Financial Times expands on the flavors of Dalmore’s recent big-ticket whiskey. He says besides being 200 grand, the 62-year-old single malt has another catch...
“...the whisky boasts a cornucopia of flavours and aromas, which...include honey, Seville oranges, coffee, bitter chocolate, cardamom, cloves, ginger and almonds... Ironically, however, it is possible the new owner will never discover any of this. Buyers of Scotch are increasingly intending to collect rather than sup...”
Finally, a writer for Channel News Asia writes the purchase is part of growing regional trend--whiskey’s warming in Asia.
“The rare purchase at Changi Airport is testament to the booming demand in Asia for Scotland's treasured national drink...The Scotch Whisky Association said exports to the region in the first half of 2011 grew 33 per cent to US$665 million. In Singapore alone, exports grew 64 per cent to around US$234 million.”
So, what if you want just a sip of the record-breaking scotch? A single serving of the Dalmore single malt would cost you about $12,000.
