The U.S. Coast Guard says two small airplanes collided near San Francisco Sunday and a search is now on for the missing pilot.
“One of the planes crashed into the bay. … There is a search right now for the plane’s wreckage. The other landed at a small airport in Amador County.” (Via KGO-TV)
The accident took place around 4 p.m. just north of The Brothers island in the northern part of the San Francisco Bay.
An FAA spokesman said the collision involved a Cessna 210 and a Hawker Sea Fury. The Hawker managed to land after the collision, while the Cessna is thought to have crashed into the water with one person on board. (Via Wikimedia Commons / Christian Jansky, Tony Hisgett)
The two planes are thought to have been part of the Pacific Coast Dream Machines festival. A Hawker Sea Fury is promoted under the “Vintage Warbirds” section of the event’s site.
The pilot of the Hawker is reportedly uninjured. A water search, shown here by KTVU, is underway for the other pilot.
Four Coast Guard boats are reportedly involved in the search along with one helicopter, and one San Francisco journalist noted 10 vessels in total are participating. (Via Twitter / svqjournalist)
