WESTERN MEDIA CRITICIZED FOR BIASED GAZA COVERAGE
January 07, 2009 04:32 PM
Newsy.com is keeping an eye on how media across the globe are covering the Gaza conflict, as Israel and Palestine have yet to agree on international calls for a ceasefire. The Western media once again are being accused of imbalanced reporting, while the Arabic news outlets play a bigger role in offering new perspectives on the story. Newsy.com brings you the views from different sources.FRANCE 24
In a section called “The Observers” on its Web site, France 24 says the international press “is somewhat lacking in images from Gaza” due to lack of access to the war zone and the Internet cutoff in Gaza.
One of the bloggers, Lisa Goldman, stresses the difference between footage shown on Arabic and Israeli channels. France 24 also shows the front pages of pro-Palestine blogs and the Israeli sites.
“The Arabic channels have really horrific images on a loop: bodies torn to pieces, corpses of children, etc., while the Israeli channels never show them. They only show the aerial-view shots of bombings taken by the army. And sometimes victims' accounts, but they're not illustrated.” (France 24)

Al Jazeera English
Al Jazeera closely follows how the violent situation is seen through the media’s eyes. One of its writers slams the U.S. media coverage on the conflict, accusing them of prioritizing Israel’s version of events, excluding the overall Palestinian death count and underplaying the Palestinian perspective.
“Interviews with Israeli spokesmen and ambassadors were not juxtaposed with the voices of Palestinian leaders. Prominent American news anchors frequently adopted the Israeli viewpoint. In talk show discussions, instead of debating events on the ground, the pundits often reinforced each other's views.” (Al Jazeera English)

Al Arabiya News Channel
Abeer Najjar of AlArabiya.net, the online version of Dubai-based Al Arabiya News Channel, cites the success of Israel in gaining media attention and urges the Palestinians to do the same.
“… it is vital that the Palestinians do well: they are the weaker party; they have an excellent case, and they need international support to protect their rights – and their lives.
So it is necessary that they start strategizing their media campaign as the Israelis do and not leave it to individual opinions and perceptions that gain them popularity only on the “Arab Street”.” (Al Arabiya)

Middle East Times
Egyptian newspaper Middle East Times says in its editorial the horrifying images of the victims in Gaza have been toned down in the North American and Western European media.
“Of course these are rarely images seen in the West. They don't mix well with breakfast or dinner. But it would benefit the West, especially Americans, to see such images. The reason for that is not to promote anti-Israeli feelings, but rather to help Americans understand "why do they hate us so much?" (Middle East Times)
