Comedian Kathy Griffin has apologized for posing for a picture with a fake decapitated head resembling President Donald Trump.

Griffin partnered with photographer Tyler Shields for the gory photo shoot. During the shoot, she joked that the two would need to flee to Mexico to avoid jail time after the pictures were released.

But apparently Griffin didn't anticipate the intense social media backlash. In her apology video, Griffin said she was "just now seeing the reaction" to the photos. She added: "I understand how it offends people. It wasn't funny; I get it."

In a now-deleted tweet, Griffin initially insisted she wasn't condoning violence but "merely mocking the Mocker in Chief."

Griffin and Shields have both removed the images from social media. The photos are still up on TMZ, which ran an exclusive on the photo shoot.
