A federal court has blocked President Donald Trump's plan to bar transgender people from serving in the military.

A U.S. district judge ruled Monday that the transgender service members who filed a lawsuit against the controversial ban "have established that they will be injured by these directives, due both to the inherent inequality they impose, and the risk of discharge and denial of accession that they engender."

The judge's decision temporarily prevents the Pentagon from enforcing the ban, which Trump first announced on Twitter in July.

Guidance from the White House came about a month later and pointed to the "negative effects" of letting openly transgender people serve in the military.
