British Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced that British troops would be withdrawn from Iraq by the end of May. According to Bloomberg, this will leave the U.S. without its biggest ally. U.K.’s The Guardian notes that around 300 troops will remain in Iraq to perform various tasks. The A.P. said that prior to the announcement, British forces were to stay in Iraq until the end of July.

“Britain had previously said the 4,000-strong mission would conclude in the early summer, and Brown's statement appeared to accelerate that timetable.”
Bloomberg
“The agreement will leave the U.S. without its most important ally in Iraq and allow Britain to divert more resources into the escalating conflict in Afghanistan.”
The Guardian
“About 300 (troops) will stay to continue training Iraq army officers and naval forces patrolling the waters bordering Iran.”
