Watching the latest anti-Trump PAC advertisement is kind of like watching the "Mean Tweets" segment on "Jimmy Kimmel Live." Except instead of celebrities reading rude comments from their Twitter trolls (all in good fun), these women are not-so-lightheartedly reciting quotes by a troll they all seem to have in common: Donald Trump.
No apocalyptic background music or corruption-screaming graphics in this PAC ad - just the Republican presidential candidate and his words. "Women, you have to treat them like s***," for example. Or, "That must be a pretty picture, you dropping to your knees." Heartwarming.
Some might argue an ad like this was long overdue. These are tweets from December 2015 and February 2016.
The Super PAC that did make the ad? Our Principles, a Republican/anti-Trump PAC founded by Katie Packer, the deputy manager for Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential campaign. People on the Internet had a range of emotions about the ad when it made its debut Monday. Some thought the ad was powerful while others thought it would do little to move those who share Trump's views on women.
Easiest job in the political ad world: Putting up a clip of Trump degrading women (as he does so often). Trump in his own words. #NeverTrump— Aaron Beckman (@aaronmbeckman) March 2, 2016
Bad news for you folks, that anti-Trump "what he says about women" ad won't move the needle with his people.— Chris Barron (@ChrisRBarron) March 14, 2016
Trump certainly chimed in on all this.
The video closes with the statement "This is how Donald Trump talks about our mothers, our sisters, our daughters."
So...how would Trump's mother feel about her son's comments? Mary MacLeod Trump was a prominent philanthropist and proponent of better access to women's health services in Jamaica. She died in 2000, but it sure would be interesting to hear her take on this ad.
