There's always a particular sense of solemnity when a comedian starts being serious, especially when it's on a comedy show.

On a special election night episode of "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" the host wrapped up the evening on an emotional note. The election results hadn't been called yet, but it was quickly becoming clear that Trump was the expected winner.

Colbert spoke of his disappointment and the memory of his late mother, who wanted to see a woman president. But he also wanted to remind Americans of what unites, rather than divides us.

Many fans got emotional.

Stephen himself may have said it best.
