Twitter Just Became The Gabby Douglas Defense Squad

August 15, 2016

Gabby Douglas is one of the most well-known, accomplished athletes in the world. That fame has put her in the spotlight for lots of criticism and bullying online. In the last week, she's been the butt of jokes and the object of harsh criticism for just about everything but her actual performance.

People have made fun of her hair, an especially unkind move considering how often black women are shamed for their natural hair. She also faced heavy backlash for not having her hand on her heart during the national anthem. She has been called ugly, unsupportive of her teammates and even un-American — keep in mind that she's 20 years old.

But there have also been tons of fans and supporters spreading more positive messages. After she talked about how hard Twitter bullying had been, #LOVE4GABBYUSA started trending.

People with a military background had her back.

So did plenty of others.

Leslie Jones, a huge fan of Team USA and someone who understands what it's like to be harassed on Twitter, reached out with her own message of support.

Faith in humanity restored. Of course, if people weren't terrible to her in the first place none of this would've happened.

Faith in humanity semirestored.
