who cares if Israel ferries in supplies. that is a symbolic gesture that is ultimately hegemonic. They are essentially forcing Gazans to live under siege. Militants aren't the only people affected by these policies. In fact, they are more likely to have the means to circumvent these measures. Yes, terrorism is a problem, yes people can fashion bombs out of crude material and while i don't in any feel like terrorism is ever justified some one needs to ask why they are fashioning these bombs. Israel, the U.S. and now Egypt are oppressing people because they are the wrong shade of brown, because they pray the wrong way. Gazan's have few and often impotant diplomatic channels to turn to which is one of the reasons why they radicalize, we've left them with nothing by Hamas. This is internationally sanctioned apartheid.  View

I fail to see how these smuggling tunnels are needed to get necessary supplies. The cartel in Mexico isn't using the tunnels they dig to the US to smuggle ho-ho's and twinkies in, so i doubt Hamas is using them for "food".  View

Egypt isn't helping the situation by shutting off the tunnels completely. Maybe they don't have the funds for it, or it's completely impossible (which I doubt), but what about better regulating what goes through the tunnels? Completely shutting off one problem typically only creates another issue somewhere else. I don't know what Egypt does already (and I'd like to know), but perhaps if they spent more time policing the goods (and humans) trafficked through the tunnels, they could find a better solution that helps both Gaza and Israel and Egpyt. I'm sure not everyone in Gaza is a member of Hamas, anyway, but they're being treated like they are.  View

public opinion or not, this kind of compromise ultimately puts more soldiers at risk. It gives groups like Hamas an incentive to imprison soldiers in the future once this kind of precedent has been set.  View

when exchanging prisoners, I think you have to go one-for-one...trading one Israeli soldiers for many Hamas militants devalues both by communicating that a thousand of the latter equals one of the former and that capture of a single Israeli soldier in future will get Hamas everything it wants. a bad situation all around.  View

I think donations are a good thing, but whats the use in giving money to fund buildings, if they just get knocked down in the next fight between Israel and Hamas? Tossing money at these people and crossing your fingers that it will fix the problem is not enough.  View

Cutting out Hamas is not a good idea. They effectively control Gaza as much as anyone can claim to. Even if many international actors don't want to legitimate the rule of a group that has sponsored terrorist acts...denying they exist isn't going to help aid in reconstruction. But, Moon's argument that settlement is the grievance perpetuating violence is undermined by reports of ultra-orthodoxy taking hold of even mainstream Jerusalem. Every player is getting harder core culturally, and it's not just because other players are breaking the 'rules'. Extremism is the problem, not border encroachment. Without a moderating cultural or political influence on both the gazan and israeli sides, peace isn't probable.  View
